Introducing our new autonomic function testing service

Autonomic function testing is a new service provided by Riddiford Neurology. Autonomic function testing assesses the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary bodily functions like heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, bladder and sexual function. Unlike peripheral nerves, the autonomic nervous system cannot be directly evaluated. Tests examine the autonomic nervous system’s control over various body systems, such as heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and sweating.

There are three main indications for autonomic function testing; orthostatic intolerance, autonomic failure, and unexplained transient loss of consciousness.

Orthostatic intolerance (symptoms that occur on standing, including lightheadedness, dizziness, palpitations, nausea, difficulty concentrating) is a common indication and has many potential causes including postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).

Autonomic failure may occur in neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease (PD) and multi-system atrophy (MSA). It can also occur with some types of peripheral neuropathy (diabetic and amyloid neuropathy).

Transient loss of consciousness may be due to inappropriate heart rate or blood pressure response resulting in syncope (fainting).

Autonomic function testing is complex and often requires a combination of tests to evaluate the different autonomic disorders. Autonomic function tests aims to induce your symptoms in a controlled and safe environment where you can be monitored. Tests typically include a tilt table test, as well as breathing tests and other provocative manoeuvres designed to evaluate the autonomic nervous system. You can read more about what’s involved here

Requests for autonomic function testing typically require a referral from a specialist. Depending on the specific clinical question, a consultation with a neurologist, cardiologist, or physician may be required to select the most appropriate testing.

Dr Christina Cameron supervises autonomic function testing at Riddiford Neurology. She is a Consultant Physician and expert in autonomic disorders. If your doctor has a specific question regarding autonomic function testing, they can contact Dr Cameron or Riddiford Neurology.
