Nerve conduction studies are a neurological study looking for problems in nerves. These tests can be done on a wide variety of nerves but are most commonly undertaken on nerves of the arms and the legs.
The test involves placing small electrodes on the skin and stimulating the nerve with a small electrical pulse. The sensation is well tolerated by almost all patients.
This test looks at the electrical activity of the muscle by placing a small measuring needle within the muscle. Recordings are taken with the muscle relaxed and when the muscle is tensed.
This takes a few minutes for each muscle. There is a mild scratch as the needle is placed, however the test is also well tolerated by the vast majority of patients.
